Instagram has been being compared to Facebook for a very long time and the roller coaster is on up to date. People find it so exciting to compare Instagram features with those of Facebook in order to find out which social media platform is the best.
Recently, Facebook has launched a new feature that allows its users to back date their posts. Just after that, people have started asking questions if Instagram also allows its users to back date Instagram photos or not. In this quick article, we will try to find the answer to this question.
But before that, let’s take a quick look at what back dating a post actually means.
What do you mean by back dating a post?
In the simplest words, back dating a post means resetting its publish date i.e. the date on which it was published. People usually back date their social media posts to correct the publish date of the post so that the publisher can restore the memories with the correct date.
Does Instagram allow you to back date Instagram photos?
The official answer is No. Instagram currently does not allow you to back date Instagram photos. Also, there is a very low chance that the company will launch this feature in 2023 even.
In such a condition, what should you do if you can’t back date your Instagram photos? Luckily, I’ve got two decent alternatives under my sleeves that can be of help.
Alternatives to back dating Instagram photos
Method 1. Delete and repost as an alternative
Deleting a post you want to back date might not seem to be the best option. But trust me, it’s not the worst decision either. If you want to correct the date of your Instagram photo but are unable to back date it, you can delete it and repost the same image with the current date.
If you are an avid Instagram user, you would know that once you delete an Instagram post, it is not deleted permanently. Instead, it is placed on the “recently deleted” page of your profile for a period of 30 days. So, if you ever feel like recovering that photo, you can do it too.

Method 2. Archive the post
Another trick you can do instead of back dating an Instagram photo is that you can archive the photo you wanted to back date. Now, as you know, archiving an Instagram photo simply means hiding it from your followers and other users.
Let me say this straight to you. Archiving your Instagram photos won’t change their publish dates. It will just make them disappear from your followers’ and other IG users’ screens. And then, you can republish the same photo with the accurate date to save your memories.
Here is how you can archive your Instagram photo.
- Open the Instagram application on your mobile or PC and log into your account
- Go to the profile section and tap on the photo you wish you archive
- Click on the three dots above the photo and click on “archive” to hide that post from your followers and other Instagram users.
And with these three super simple steps, you can easily archive any of your Instagram posts as an alternative to back dating it. Instagram also allows you to unarchive a post so if you want to get it back, you can do it as well.
It’d be great if Instagram launched a feature to back date Instagram photos. However, it’s not possible for now. Unlike Facebook, Instagram does not allow you to back date Instagram photos or videos. However, you can try out the two alternatives I have mentioned in the article instead of that.
